The company Lakland Musical Instruments was founded in 1994 and grew out of a quite successful trade in used basses, which the company founders Dan Lakin and Hugh McFarland had run until then. From the beginning, Lakland worked closely with Bartolini and that's how he found his way onto the NAMM show. And although Lakland basses are high-end instruments of excellent quality, it was still a long, thorny path until you were on the meanwhile long Lakland user list under other names such as Donald "Duck" Dunn, Adam Clayton, Mike Gordon, Geezer Butler , Pino Palladino or Darryl Jones could find.
Even with comparatively younger bands like Incubus, The Subways, Papa Roach and also in the electro area like the trip-hop icon and Massive Attack guest Tricky, Lakland enjoys great popularity due to the first-class workmanship and the rather tight, modern sound! Since the introduction of Lakland's flagship models in the mid-1990's, these basses have become the most respected instruments in the studio and on stage, now favored by discerning players and professional artists around the world. The vintage comfort and contemporary sophistication of the Skyline models are characterized by excellent sound, playability and construction and offer an incomparable playing experience!
The Lakland Skyline SDJ5 Darryl Jones is a signature bass by the American bassist from Chicago, who played for the Rolling Stones, Herbie Hancock and Peter Gabriel, among others. The instrument comes from the Skyline series and features a swamp ash body with a maple neck. On this is an maple fretboard with 21 frets and white block inlays. Two Lakland Vintage Wound single coils, sharing a tone control but with separate volume controls, capture the tone perfectly!
With the SDJ-5 from the Skyline series, his work tool is now available in an affordable version that does not save on equipment: the same Lakland single coils are used as in the USA models, as is the graphite-reinforced neck big block deposits! The bass is a really great instrument in terms of sound and looks! Thanks to "Plek technology", this instrument has perfectly trimmed and rounded frets! With the Plek process, each neck is individually measured and processed to the nearest thousandth in order to achieve an optimal set-up and inimitable playability!
