FGN's patented development (Patent No. 3282035): The Circle Fretting System (C.F.S.). In 2002, the FGN R&D department, together with Tatsuya Matsushita, invented the revolutionary Circle Fretting System (C.F.S.).
Here, all strings run over the frets at precisely the same angle, enabling the most accurate intonation as well as longer sustain and a clearer tone.
Due to the trapezoidal shape of the fretboard on conventionally fretted necks, none of the strings run over the frets at a right angle. The closer a string is to the edge of the fretboard, the further it is from a right angle. When the string is then pressed down onto the fret, this angle creates a geometrically imprecise contact point, which negatively affects the string vibration. The result is slightly distorted intonation. With the Circle Fretting System (CFS), the frets are inserted into slots milled with a minimal radius in the fretboard, thus acquiring their radius. As a result, each string passes every fret at a precise right angle. The contact points of each string in every position are precisely defined, allowing the strings to vibrate with minimal distortion. The result is both subtle and surprising, yet so effective that FGN decided to patent it.
The frets used by FGN for the CFS are made of standard, unbent fret material. They acquire their radius by being inserted into the radius-milled slots in the fretboard and can therefore be easily replaced by a luthier if a refret is needed!
