FGN's patented development (Patent No. 3282035): The circular or arc bonding system C.F.S. In 2002, the FGN R&D department invented the revolutionary Circle Fretting System (C.F.S.) together with Tatsuya Matsushita.
All strings run over the frets at exactly the same angle, which enables the most precise intonation as well as a longer sustain and a clearer tone.
Due to the trapezoidal fingerboard on conventionally fretted necks, none of the strings run over the frets at a right angle. The closer a string is to the edge of the fretboard, the further from a right angle it is. When the string is then pressed onto the fret, this angle causes a geometrically blurred contact point, which negatively influences the string vibration. The result is a slightly distorted intonation. With the Circle Fretting System, the frets are inserted into the slots in the fingerboard that are milled with a minimum radius and this is how they get their radius. Therefore, every string passes every fret at exactly right angles. The contact points of each string in each position are precisely defined, allowing the strings to vibrate with a minimum of distortion. The result is both subtle and very surprising, but so clear that FGN decided to patent it.
The frets used by FGN for the CFS are made of completely regular, not pre-bent fret material. They get their radius by inserting them into the slots milled into the fingerboard with a radius and can therefore be easily replaced by a guitar maker if re-fretting is required!
