Sander de Gier built his first "instrument" while still a child. It was meant to look like a Telecaster, even though it was just a wooden stick with strings attached. It was good enough, however, to start a band with other neighborhood kids. As a teenager, he attempted to build a real guitar but stalled halfway through the process. Things got more serious in his early twenties; after working alongside another guitar maker for a time, he founded De Gier Guitars in 1996.
From then on, he simply kept going—one guitar at a time, one customer at a time. It has been an amazing journey filled with both challenges and rewards, and today Sander has customers all over the world... many of whom are professional players. His work involves custom craftsmanship and limited annual production, blending vintage inspiration with modern innovation to create basses that feel like they’ve been played for decades, yet offer the sound and playability of modern precision. They are played by renowned artists such as Marcus Miller, Richard Bona, and Glenn Gaddum Jr.—the latter of whom even has his own signature model.
While the standard Bebop was designed as a modern bass—versatile, comfortable, reliable, and a true workhorse for musicians—the Bebop Classic caters to purists seeking that authentic vintage sound. The goal was to create the best vintage-style Jazz Bass available... short of owning an actual vintage Jazz Bass.
