FGN's patented development (Patent No. 3282035): The circle or arch fretting system C.F.S. In 2002, the FGN R&D department invented the revolutionary Circle Fretting System (C.F.S.) together with Tatsuya Matsushita. All strings run over the frets at exactly the same angle, which enables the most precise intonation and also a longer sustain and a clearer tone. Due to the trapezoidal fingerboard on conventionally fretted necks, none of the strings run over the frets at a right angle. The closer a string is to the edge of the fingerboard, the further it is from the right angle. When the string is then pressed onto the fret, this angle causes a geometrically blurred contact point, which negatively affects the string vibration. The result is a slightly distorted intonation. With the Circle Fretting System, the frets are inserted into the slots milled with a minimal radius in the fingerboard and get their radius this way. Therefore, each string passes each fret at exactly the right angle. The contact points of each string in each position are precisely defined and allow the strings to vibrate with a minimum of distortion. The result is both subtle and very surprising, but so clear that FGN decided to patent it. The frets used by FGN for the CFS are made of completely regular, non-pre-bent fret material. They get their radius by being inserted into the slots milled with a radius in the fingerboard and can therefore be easily replaced by a guitar maker if new frets are required!
