Lakland Musical Instruments was founded in 1994, growing out of a successful used bass business previously run by founders Dan Lakin and Hugh McFarland. From the beginning, Lakland worked closely with Bartolini, which led to their appearance at the NAMM Show. And although Lakland basses are high-end instruments of exceptional quality, it was a long and arduous journey to reach their now extensive user list, which includes names like Donald "Duck" Dunn, Adam Clayton, Mike Gordon, Geezer Butler, Pino Palladino, and Darryl Jones.
Even among relatively newer bands like Incubus, The Subways, and Papa Roach, as well as in the electronic music scene, including trip-hop icon and Massive Attack guest artist Tricky, Lakland enjoys immense popularity due to its first-class craftsmanship and tight, modern sound. Since the introduction of Lakland's flagship models in the mid-1990s, these basses have become some of the most highly regarded instruments in the studio and on stage, now favored by discerning players and professional artists worldwide. The vintage comfort and contemporary refinement of the Skyline models are characterized by outstanding tone, playability, and construction, offering an unparalleled playing experience!
The inspiration for the HB30 was simply to design a truly cool short-scale instrument that captures the characteristics of vintage hollow basses. The body is carved rather than braced, which adds a bit more weight to balance the neck, preventing it from being "neck-heavy." This design also allows the use of the standard Lakland tailpiece bridge for rock-solid intonation without a floating bridge. The neck features a familiar 1.5" J-taper design, resulting in comfortable and familiar string spacing. The playing ergonomics are similar to Lakland's full-scale models, with the 12th fret positioned exactly where you'd expect it. The vintage-style single-coil pickups deliver a powerful and punchy output with plenty of depth and character. The layout of the volume/tone controls is industry standard and instantly familiar. The styling is retro-Italian inspired for a 1960s vibe that looks as great as it sounds.
