Maybach Guitars has always been built on a clear promise: "Made in Europe." The concept originated long before the first instruments were released; three years of planning and preparation shaped a vision of instruments that would combine traditional craftsmanship with modern durability. This vision became reality in 2011, when the first Maybach instruments left the workshop and reached musicians seeking an uncompromising sound inspired by vintage instruments.
This founding principle defines every instrument bearing the Maybach name. Whether it is a model from the Standard Series or a unique piece from the Masterbuilt line, every instrument is crafted with the same care and dedication. The focus lies on carefully selected tonewoods, historically accurate construction, and a deep respect for classic designs. The result is a range of instruments that feel instantly familiar while offering the reliability required for modern live performances.
As the global landscape shifted between 2020 and 2022, Maybach responded with foresight and a sense of responsibility. The growing scarcity of traditional tonewoods prompted the company to invest heavily in researching sustainable sourcing methods. They explored new materials and more responsible supply chains—always with a single goal in mind: to maintain high quality and preserve the sound musicians expect from a Maybach.
Today, the brand represents far more than just instruments made in Europe. It embodies a philosophy rooted in tradition, sustainability, craftsmanship, and genuine value. Maybach instruments are prized by active musicians, collectors, and touring artists who need an instrument they can rely on. Each instrument is designed to be a long-term musical companion—crafted with care and built to last a lifetime of playing.
The J-Bass... an icon and, alongside its older sibling the "P," arguably the most famous electric bass of all time. When it debuted in 1960, this ergonomic, versatile bass—featuring a distinctive offset body—was intended for jazz bassists; however, the four-stringer quickly found widespread appeal across a multitude of genres. A timeless classic offering a sound that is both distinctive and multifaceted, along with comfortable playability whether seated or standing, it remains a top choice for studio sessions and live gigs alike, and is a staple in the arsenals of many outstanding bassists. Legendary players such as Jaco Pastorius, Larry Graham, Marcus Miller, Geddy Lee, and John Paul Jones are—or were—inextricably linked to the J-style bass, and countless milestones in music history have been recorded using it.
The J-Bass is renowned for its bright, punchy sound, making it ideal for genres like funk, jazz, rock, and more. The ability to blend the two pickups offers tonal versatility, ranging from warm and mellow to spicy and growling. Maybach has authentically—and, one might say, perfectly—captured these characteristics with the Motone J. The combination of Italian Moon Spruce for the body, a maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard, and Amber Waterfall pickups proved to be an excellent choice after extensive testing; Maybach is proud to pay tribute to this magnificent bass design with the Motone J.
The Amber Waterfall J-Bass style pickup impresses with a defined, percussive fundamental tone and plenty of "punch." The bridge pickup is also reverse-wound, ensuring hum-free operation when both pickups are active.
